Weaving a bridge to allow a family to safely enter a small area of forest from their garden

A quick look at some of the key steps

This was a totally unique brief from the client – we’ve got an awesome bit of forest land, but the kids can’t get to it safely from the garden. We want something fun and safe……. Look no further than a hand woven rope bridge to allow all the family to easily access the area of forest (and add a little sparkle of fun for it! )

1. This project was very different to a normal net, due to the length between the trees. So we chose high quality perimiter rope (Beale) and then decided to use hard wood sections every 150cm to keep the width and integrity of the bridge in place (without these the bridge would become too narrow in the middle section)
2. First job was to secure the perimeter rope and then add on all the wooden pieces. These allowed us to make the overall shape of the bridge and decide on the best gradient from the higher to lower section – we wanted a gradual slope down so to ensure it was easily accessible for the kids

3. Once the wood and perimeter rope was in place, we were able to tighten everything to form the exact shape. We could then start the process of weaving in each section, using ladders to access the higher areas . After about 50% of the weave, it’s then possible to start sitting on the bridge to finish the final weaving

4. Once the bridge floor was finished, we then started weaving walls. We needed these to both act as a handrail and to ensure no one could fall out. The results were great – with the kids getting the bridge just before summer and then being able to play on both the bridge and the forest area all through the warmer months
